Two of the island sources put the time inside at about five minutes, and one of them, in its own list of drawbacks, says three to five. A fourth says ten, and it is the outlier. I write under five, because that is what the majority of sources say and it is what I watch happen from the road. The rower pulls the boat in on a chain, turns it in the chamber, and comes back out. He is not being rude when he does not linger. There are four people in the boat behind you and a queue on the steps.
Why the queue is long and fixed
Each rowboat carries four passengers and the visit lasts under five minutes, so the cave has a low, fixed throughput and the wait is just the number of people ahead of you divided by it. That is also why nothing skips it. There is no ticket, tour or booking on sale that changes your position in that line, and any product marketed as a skip-the-line for the Blue Grotto is selling something that does not exist. What you can do is arrive at a better hour: before 9:30 the wait is around thirty minutes and in the middle of the day 60 to 90. The full pattern is on the best time to visit.
What the four minutes contain
A chamber about 60 metres long and 25 metres wide, with a vault averaging around seven metres and reaching fourteen, lit blue from a submerged opening beneath the entrance rather than through the entrance itself. You are lying flat for the way in, sitting for the loop, lying flat again for the way out. It is short, and it is not nothing. Whether that trade works for you is the argument I have laid out here.
Count the whole errand, not the visit. Two hours out of a day on Capri, for under five minutes of cave, is the calculation that decides this for most people — and it decides it either way, which is the point.
